5 Screen-Free Ideas That Don't Feel Like a Punishment

Updated: Aug 30, 2025

Parenting in today's world comes with a whole new set of frustrations. Our kids are growing up in a world where screens are everywhere - and if I'm honest, I know I'm part of the reason it is so hard to break my son's screen habits. I blame COVID. It changed everything for our family. Suddenly I was working from home, juggling deadlines and trying to keep a household running. More times than I'd like to admit, I handed my son a device just so I could keep him quiet during online meetings. It worked in the moment, but it also became the norm.

And now? It feels like screens have become the default - for entertainment, for quiet time, for everything. But I've learned that if we can carve out time to put them down, even for a few hours, we rediscover each other in the most beautiful ways. Screen-free Sundays isn't about guilt or strict rules - it's about giving ourselves the chance to reconnect.

Here are five easy connection-filled activities to try on your next screen-free Sunday - no special gear or Pinterest-level prep required.

  1. Photo Bingo

Make memory-making into a game! Give each person a list or card of photo prompts - like:

  • Take a photo of something heart shaped

  • Find someone laughing

  • Capture a moment of kindness

Let the kids take turns with a camera or your phone in airplane mode. You'll be amazed at what they notice when they're not just posing.

  1. Reverse Hide and Seek

One person hides, everyone else counts - but the twist? Once you find them, you quietly hide with them. The last person left searching gets the biggest group cuddle.

  1. Story Walk

Pick a local trail, park or even your own backyard. As you walk, take turn telling a story one sentence at a time. Let imaginations go wild. (And bonus - it usually ends in giggles.)

  1. Kitchen Helpers

Kids LOVE being in charge. Choose a simple recipe (think fruit skewers or DIY pizzas), assign roles, and let them take the lead. Snap a photo of the masterpiece - messy apron and all.

  1. Memory Jar

Grab a jar and some paper. At the end of the day, have everyone write down (or draw) their favourite moment from your screen-free Sunday. Keep adding each week - you'll have a jar full of joy by the end of the year.

Why these moments matter

As a family photographer, I've learned that the best photos aren't always about perfect outfits or golden hour light. They're about connection. The way your daughter scrunches her nose when she laughs. The proud smile after your son flips a pancake all by himself.

Screen-free Sundays don't just help your kids unplug - they help you to see each other again.
